I bought an 05 Touareg V8 to pull a boat weighing 3000 lbs. It pulls like the boat is not there. Amazing how all that power is produced out of a modest 4.2L. The 350 hp makes the 5000 lb SUV feel like a light sports car. I got 17.9mpg (Canadian Imperial) pulling the boat and 26mpg without. It wasn't easy. You have to keep to 60mph and drive without the cruise control on with a light foot. Also select the tiptronic to 6th gear because the automatic setting kicks down too early and wastes fuel. Also monitor your instantaneous mpg with the on-board computer. Pretend that your throttle is like a balloon and your right foot is wearing a golf shoe. Now that's a light foot! Mid-grade fuel is adequate but regular gives poor fuel economy. Acetone didn't seem to help much. I have 4 VWs in my corral! HeeHaw! Source: eBay Motors Reviews |
2005 Volkswagen Touareg: Baby Porsche? Yip....... and then some First let me say that there is only one thing that disappoints me about my 2005 VW Touareg and thats the overdrive gear. When Im cruising on the freeway at 70 mph the tachometer is running at about 2600 rpm's. I believe this is the largest contributing factor in the poor mpg my V8 VW gets (14 mpg average). My old Jeep Grand Cherokee would have been at about 2000 rpm's at the same speed. OK, now that Ive said that, let me now sing the praises of this fine automoblie. Gone are the days of the stripped down medium build quality Vdubs. Now that the company shares parts and engineering with Audi and Porsche, VW's are every bit as well built as any other German auto. NO KIDDING. Just take a test drive in one of these SUV's and see first hand the performance and attention to detail they have to offer. I know what youre saying, $45,000 + for a VW, well consider that Chevy and Dodge are asking over $40K for theirs now and youll know why. Just compare the quality of materials and the creature comforts and you will believe as I do that its worth the dough for the premium VW SUV. Before you buy, I recommend that you seriously consider getting the V8 over the V6 because these things weigh over 5000 pounds. Youre gonna need the extra HP to move this thing. I also recommend that you shop around. While some dealerships are still playing hardball to squeeze every dollar they can get out of you, there are others simply intrested in moving inventory. I got mine for $4500 under MSRP. If youre in the market for an SUV and are able and willing to spend over $40K you shouldnt sign the dotted line before checking out a VW TOUAREG. DRIVER FOUND ! ! I'm a car fanatic having owned well over 200 cars. I'm usually bored quickly, soon getting a newer thrill. But with this car, we just never seemed to want to part with it. We purchased it new and now hove over 100,000 miles on it. The fuel economy id OK for all wheel drive all of the time. Tires wear quickly, but we found that Bridgestone Dueller H/L's last 40,000 miles and handle quite well. We did have the drive shaft carrier bearing fail on us, but VW paid for the part and the towing even though it was out of warranty, which was very nice. K& N filters help it breath a bit better, but fuel economy stayed the same. As for power, performance, handling comfort and luxury appointments, this car is "best of class" If this is what you are looking for and are unafraid of the price, its awesome. We plan on selling it in spring on Ebay to get another newer model also from Ebay. Source: eBay Motors Reviews |
