Let me start buy saying that I had several other makes of cars in the past American and Japanese. The Japanese were all more reliable. This is my 2nd Subaru. My last car was a 1990 Legacy front wheel drive that I drove for over 5 years. when I traded that car in it had 220,000 miles and was still running and never gave me much trouble other mostly than normal wear things like battery, brakes, tires tune-up and the usual fluid and filter changes but I felt it was soon time for something newer and nicer. So I decided that I would buy another Subaru. I was all set to look at Foresters until I saw my beautiful White frost pearl colored Outback Limited sedan on the lot. I have had my 2003 outback Limited sedan since August 2007. I purchased it with 73,000 miles and to date have had it in once for repair of a torn CV boot and replaced 2 axle seals. I have serviced it several other times but just a cooling system flush along with oil and fluid changes since then. Oil changes are easy to do on most Subaru's, the areas you need access to do it are right up front under the engine where its easy to see and reach unlike other makes. The engine is smooth and quiet at idle like my old Subaru and only makes its self well heard under hard acceleration.
The AWD is nice in the winter. I love the great stereo with 6 disc cd changer and the heated leather seats are very comfortable and the heat feels so nice when starting out your commute to work on a cold winter morning. the car's body looks much like a regular Legacy sedan but is higher like the outback wagons and had the same trim and body cladding as the outback wagon so it looks tougher. The ride is smooth on the highway and most roads but to me feels firmer more like an SUV over rougher surfaces.
The inside is very comfortable for 4 adults for trips but not really for 5 for more than a short trip. 3 kids should fit fine in the back seat. The trunk is plenty roomy but only has a ski pass-tru the back seat doesn't fold down to carry more cargo and less passengers which I wish it had.
Performance is good but not super fast you won't be out running Mustangs and other sports cars but its not a slow car. There is enough power to merge on to an interstate with ease and handle most any driving situation. I often catch myself doing 80mph or more on the interstate. climbing long steep hills can slow you down some but then all 4 cylinder cars this size are like that. My fuel economy has been about 24 to 25 miles per gallon in mixed city and highway driving, which is not to bad for an all wheel drive car. Iver all I am pleased with the car and would recommend it or any Subaru car to a friend or family. Source: eBay Motors Reviews |

I bought this type of car because they are very reliable, comfortable and can carry lots of stuff. I decided to buy it through Ebay motors because I have very limited time to go out car shopping because I am a full time student, full time worker and single parent. Needless to say I have very limited time. I chose this specific car because the seller wrote in the ad this car was like new with no problems. This was not the case. The night I drove the car home, I emailed the seller to let them know there was something wrong with the car. I brought the car to Subaru who told me the car needed some repairs on the exact things I emailed the seller about the day I drove it home. I have tried to make a resolution with the seller to no avail. The repairs are in excess of 700 dollars and I have told the seller to just refund me 1/2 that amount and we will split the cost. I have gotten Paypal involved but I am still waiting for a response. There doesn't seem to be a way to get Ebay involved in helping me or I would get them involved too. I would not recommend buying a car this way nor will I do it again. Source: eBay Motors Reviews |

Some folks get squeamish about buying cars on ebay, but I'm batting 1,000% with the two I have bought. This 02 Outback would be the second of the two cars I've bought on ebay and Auto Plus of Westport MA did a wonderful job describing it, communicating with me, and even offering to pick me up at the terminal in Providence. The price was excellent, and the car was in excellent condition for a 7 year old with over 100k on it. Yes, I will have some maintenance work to do on it, but that was expected. It will be our family's primary car now and we do a combination of city and highway driving, but this Outback really shines in the snow. To paraphrase a friend of mine,"Outback is the Japanese word for snowmobile!!" We held out for a 5 speed manual transmission as repairs on the automatic are really expensive and often cost more than the car is worth.
The car is quiet, drives nicely, seats are comfortable(I drove it 19 hours back home!), and it gets upper 20's for highway mileage on 87-89 octane gas. I held out for a reasonably priced 2000 or later due to the simplicity of the single overhead cam engine as opposed to the earlier DOHC that the 2.5 Outback had. This is our 2nd Subaru and we could own a third if the right deal came along. I don't like the body style of the newer ones(or the sticker price!), so finding a cherry one of this vintage was just what we wanted.
I hope this review has been helpful. Source: eBay Motors Reviews |
