1999 Saab 9-5: Nightmare Transaction

I've yet to drive the car. It became inoperable "immediately after the auction" & was unable to be driven. I wanted out but the Seller offered to tow it to my residence, so I agreed. He did not follow simple instructions on where to put it; instead, it was dropped off in a public alley with no registration or inspection sticker. Police were called, car was towed & impounded & cost me $313.00 to get it back.

It is now at the garage being repaired, but I have yet to receive the temporary registration that was to come with the car. The car will be done soon, and the garage has made it clear they will want the car moved as soon as possible, but I have no way to legally drive it.

I was very disappointed when I finally got to see the car & would not have followed through with the purchase if I had seen it before taking delivery. I think a lot of sellers "sugar-coat" their descriptions, but in this case, it was pretty blatant. I found myself asking "Could this be the same car that was described in the auction?" When I reread the description & looked at the pictures, it became clear the car had not been described accurately & the pictures had not specifically shown the objectionable areas, such as a sizeable dent in the hood and a large worn spot on the seat, neither one of which was mentioned. I think any honest appraiser of this vehicle would describe it's condition as "fair" or perhaps "average for it's age." The seller, however, described it as "almost perfect."

I know there are very honest sellers who go out of their way to describe & photograph all blemishes worth mentioning, but it seems that there are at least as many that do not. Cars will generally look better in photos than they do in person because it's very hard to show small dings, scrathes, etc.

I would proceed with caution on ebay motors car auctions, & always ask the seller if the sale can be mutually terminated if your inspection turns up any conditions, problems or flaws that were not mentioned. Some dealers insist the winning bidder owns the car period, no test drive or inspection allowed. To me, this is just not reasonable. Also, even a car that is sold strictly "as is" should be accurately described as a condition of sale, & if it is discovered the car had undisclosed problems AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE the sale should be rescinded, but seldom is.

I'm not saying I will not buy a car on ebay motors ever again, but I will certainly proceed with caution.

2002 Saab 9-5: 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero Sedan - Great Car, Good Bargain

10/17/06

• Overall Satisfaction:

I bought this car used on eBay Motors as a CPO car from a dealer. I couldn't believe the low price one could get these for relative to the original MSRP, this has to be one of the best bargains out there for a used car.

Likes: Powerful motor in the Aero version (250 hp) and very little turbo lag at all. It really does feel like a bigger engine. The seats are extremely comfortable (better than my previous BMW 525iT, actually) and feature heating and cooling which is really neat. The factory Harmon-kardon stereo sounds great. The fit and finish, paint, leather, plastics, etc. are all very good on my car and rival other luxury makes. Compared to my previous BMW, the Saab feels lighter and more nimble despite the ultimate handling disadvantages of front-wheel drive.

Dislikes: An in-dash CD changer would be nice... even inexpensive cars seem to offer that these days. While the engine power and freeway economy are great, around town the economy isn't any better than for 6-cylinder vehicles. Also, the engine is much noiser and vibrates a lot at idle compared to other luxury cars with different engine configurations. Then again, if you haven't experienced the pull of the Saab turbo, especially on the freeway, you should give one of these a try. Oh yeah, I couldn't forget to mention the technologically amazing yet completely useless fold-out cupholder on the dash.

Overall I'm very happy with this car. I love that it's an understated luxury car. Where I live, BMWs and Mercedes are a dime a dozen but one rarely sees Saabs. It's more comfortable and lot less money than my previous (problem-prone) BMW. I think the car is handsome and Saab's "quirky" ergonomics grow on you after a while and you wonder why other makers seem to be moving toward hard-to-use integrated GPS/stereo/climate controls. On the Saab, everything is easy to find and use.

2004 Saab 9-5: Excellent Car

After some research I have decided to go for a Saab as 5 years old car is far more affordable than any of its competitors. This would be a minus for folks buying it new, but real bargain for anyone who wants to buy it.
I like the performance - this car is awesome! The only negatives I can think of is using some cheap parts for their Emblems (they are washed out) and Lug Bolts (they are rusted). Everything else is perfect.
