The Porsche 968 is the Best all around sports car Porsche ever made through to today. Excellent performance, balanced, comfortable, always gets approving comments. Looks like a new model, and you seldom see another on the road. Unique looks with unmistakable "Porsche charisma." If you are into driving a "classic" that can keep up with contemporary, this is the one for you.

When new, the 968 was Porsche's entry level model, priced below the 911. But the 968 was more technologically advanced than the 911 of the same era, and the 968 cost as much if not more than the 911 for Porsche to build. So the slim profit margins caused Porsche to not promote the 968 - why would they do that when they were losing money on the build and the 968 was a better performer than the higher priced 911. The era of 968 production was also a down period for Porsche and other high end vehicle manufacturers. So the 968 was replaced by the less expensive to build Boxster.

Buy a Porsche 968 that has had documented recommended routine maintenance. There are several well known common mechanical issues. If the PO has not already fixed, count on spending $2k to $3K for the standard fixes. Otherwise, not more expensive to maintain than other high performance cars. If this expenditure is too big a hit for you, you should not be looking to drive any high performance classic car. There is no meaningful difference between model years, so don't pay more (or less) just because of the model year. These high performance sports cars are now about 15 years old, and require the attention of any car of its vintage. A well maintained 968 is kept to either showroom specification, or modified up to and beyond specifications for contemporary high performance sports cars. The 968 has become a popular car to modify while retaining the factory look. If modifications are done, insure they were done by qualified experts. The modifications if correct can increase the price. The seller should inform the prospective buyer of any and all modifications and who made the modification.

I am keeping my 968. Get one before the world discovers this rare limited production beauty - and the prices go up. 968 owners are a small close net group; the cost of entry is owning a 968.

I love my 968 convertible! Mine is a beautiful 25k car and many people think it is new. I don't drive it everyday, but enjoy it when I do. It is reasonbly fast, corners exceptionally and has very few problems. If you buy one it will not be cheap to own. Parts are expensive and the dealer will run you into the poor house. Shop for your parts and find a good local mechanic to help you maintain it. Make sure the maintenance has been done and that all of the belts are recent, especially the timing belt.
