1990 Oldsmobile Toronado: 1990 Oldsmobile Toronado

I bought my 1990 Toronado in February 2007. It had 31,000 original miles on it and it is in excellent shape. Since buying it I have driven it about 2,000 miles in a mix of highway cruising and running errands around town.

Styling; The styling is what sets this car apart from its Buick and Cadillac E-body cousins. It is long and low with sleek, agressive lines and its narrow full width chrome grill and hidden headlights give it a distinctive look. It is sporty and elegant at the same time with a regal, classy air to it. Instead of the Eldorado or Rivieras fake wood trim and white and cream color schemes the Toronado sports a modern, driver oriented interior with full gages, center console with floor shifter and a grey and black color scheme to the dash. It has a typical 90's look to it but doesnt look too dated or old-fashioned.

Build quality; Overall it is way above average for a GM product. The upholstery is soft and comfortable and feels very luxurious and supple. Trim pieces fit nice and close and hold tight in their mounts. Controls have a plasticy feel and the dash and door panels tend to warp with age (I live in Arizona and I'm sure the sun didnt help). The paint looks excellent and all the body panels have nice consistent edges with no uneven or excessive gaps. There are a few areas where the adhesive used to secure the windshield and rear glass is smeared and uneven and some of the rubber around the tail lights doesnt quite fit perfect.

Comfort; The Toronado is an extremely comfortable car. Handling suffers slightly because of the soft suspension; it leans excessively in hard turns and feels awkward when driven agressively (if you want better handling opt for the Trofeo' package). However, the 4 wheel disc brakes and fully independent suspension when combined with the fairly tight steering make it a pretty agile car and still fun to drive, if you dont mind a lot of body lean. The heavily bolstered bucket seats are soft and comfortable and conform to your body well. They are a little too soft sometimes. It is especially noticeable during agressive driving, you tend to slide around a bit, especially if you are on the skinny side like myself.

Performance; The GM 3800 V6 is an outstanding powerplant in terms of durability and size to power ratio. It is not unusual for these motors to go for 150,000+ miles and not burn or leak oil. It has a nice strong torque curve meaning it can move a heavy car like the Toronado (3500lbs) easily and still get good fuel economy, averaging 25mpg cruising at 75 mph. It shines at freeway speeds, easily maintaining cruising speed and running nice and quiet. However, dont expect to burn the tires or challenge a 5.0 Mustang. At 165 horsepower and 210 lbs of torque it just doesnt have the power to qualify as a "performance" car.

These cars were among the better made vehicles in the GM fleet and are made to last. The most common problems are electrical; a faulty capacitor in the gage cluster fails and kills the gages and AC. Rebuilt gage clusters are available on ebay for pretty cheap. With standard maintenance a Toronado like this will give years of reliable service with only minor repairs.

The Toronado is an excellent touring coupe that sports a high level of luxury and comfort in an attractive package. It is an excellent highway cruiser with a sporty character that has always defined what an Oldsmobile should be. If you are looking for a full size coupe you will not be disappointed.

This model and year certainly stand out. The Toronado was one of the heaviest passenger cars manufactured in this era. It was made to cruise 70 mph or faster, and its' weight and length made a smooth ride. A 30 gallon fuel tank, 8-track tape player, and lots of leg room. Electric everything, disappearing headlights and a really, really long engine hood. Front wheel drive and a fuel tank accessible by pulling the rear license plate down. A lot of younger folks think I built mine, they're actually rarely seen and almost never in exceptional shape. What a masterpiece!

These little "W"platform front wheel drive Toronado's are powered with one of General Motors' best motors;the fuel injected 3800 V6.This was a very well designed luxury sport machine. The sleek classic lines put this baby 10 years ahead of its time.Fully optioned with sun roof, Bose sound. heated leather seats with power lumbar .15 inch alloys and FE3 suspension. put this car at the top of the fun to drive list. It is still the most trouble free and economical car that I have owned.
