I like to trade cars at least every three years (just because I like cars), so when it came time to replace my 1999 Lexus LX470, I set out to look for a replacement. Accordingly, I looked at every SUV out there, and after all of my looking, it pretty much came down to three models: The Range Rover, the new body style Sequoia, and the Lexus LX.
While I think the exterior/interior style of the Range Rover is head-and-shoulders above anything else out there (and I was REALLY trying to find a reason to get one of these), I simply couldn't bring myself to take the risk on reliability. I know there are owners out there who have had no trouble at all with their Range Rovers, but they are CERTAINLY the exceptions to the rule. When you look at reliability reports, Range Rover and Mercedes are, consistently, at or near the bottom of the list, and I know myself well enough to know that, all it would take would be two or three times that the Range Rover wouldn't start, and it'd be up for sale.
With regard to the Sequoia, it is truly an impressive truck. I really like the styling, and it has virtually every gadget you could hope to have. However, I just found it hard to swallow the idea of spending $60,000 on a Toyota (at least one that didn't say "Land Cruiser" on it.) That may sound silly to some, but it's just something I couldn't get past.
That left me with the Lexus LX. For the last two years, I've been anticipating the change in the body style of both the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Lexus LX, because I knew I'd be wanting something new about the time that change would come about........BOY, was I disappointed! The body change, while relatively sight in nature, went in completely the wrong direction! Though very "Highlander" in appearance, the Highlander is a much more attractive vehicle than the new LX570. Also, even with the spectacular new interior, more powerful engine, and upgraded electronic gadgetry, there's no way I could see spending $80,000 + on something that looks like that! (That, coupled with the additional issue that the running boards - which I absolutely HATE - are integrated into the body, thereby preventing their removal)
That's when I decided to spend around half the new Sequoia price on a proven vehicle: a 2003 LX470. Though much the same as my tried-and-true, dead-solid-reliable 1999 LX470, there are some nice upgrades from the earlier model (Mark Levinson audio, navigation, etc.). My main objective was to buy a car with an enhanced safety system, and the '03 was the first year for those enhancements (side and curtain airbags, updated ABS, traction control, stability control, etc.)
Though it would have been nice to have something completely different from my '99, there are enough upgrades in the '03 to make me completely satisfied (oh, and though I never would have believed it possible, the '03 is actually quieter and smoother than my '99........and that's REALLY saying something!!) For what you get for the money, it's hard to think of another vehicle that provides so much luxury, reliability, and prestige........
