Sure it's not as comfortable as a Japanese run-of-the-mill 4x4. It may be more drafty than most other convertibles (the soft top version, at least). It certainly won't go anywhere fast. The 3.9l under-powered engine seeks to make sure that doesn't happen.
But my 1994 Defender, which is in almost stock form, receives attention everywhere it goes. I've had thumbs-up from complete strangers on the street, on the freeways, the Rose Parade route in Pasadena, at work, well... you get the picture.
No other 4x4, or truck for that matter, has even a fraction of the character or is bestowed as much respect as the Land Rover Defender has had.
Now let's discuss the economics we owners deal with. First, it may seem a steep entry in to ownership. However, aside from Italian sportscars, how many vehicles of the same vintage have held all if not all of its value. In many cases, as you can see from many of the Defenders at this or any moment, the have *increased* in value. But don't expect to make a fortune by buying a Defender. Do expect to own a fun vehicle that you can drive daily, or weekly and be confident that if and when you decide to sell it, it will have held much of its value.
While I am so very pleased with mine, and so are most owners from the Southern California Land Rover club I belong to, the Defender is not for everyone. Many seek a quiet, comfortable ride. Many seek precision in workmanship and the highest quality money can buy. Some seek to customize with large bling wheels and ultra low profile tires. And still some seek a statement of status in their trucks and SUVs.
The Defender is not for them, straight out and to the point. With a Defender, you are assured a place in a more exclusive segment of society. A more distinctive, authentic and genuine vehicle is waiting for a very lucky few.
