I've owned 2 of them. Yes it's a "turbo diesel" but those of you looking for gut wrenching performance can stop reading here. The powertrain is a 5 speed sick, 4x4, auto hubs, rear wiper and defogger, full skid plates, full carpet, front and rear tow hooks, power steering and brakes. Torsion bar independent front suspension and leaf spring solid rear axle. Bolted body on a full ladder frame. Optional A/C on both trim models. Cruise control, power locks, power window ABS and airbags are not offered at all. Two trim models were offered: The Deluxe (steel white rims, mono paint job, sparse door trim, no clock, front bucket seats, rear folding bench seat) and the more plush LS (Alloy rims, red accent stripe with two tone paint, ribbed rocker panel trim, rear step bumper, clock, full trim covered pocketed door panels, drivers height adjustable bucket seat and a very trick rear split bench seat-folds and reclines with arm rests) WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DRIVE? Always keep in mind this is old technology and not your plush modern SUV. The steering wheel will buzz in your hand at a traffic light from the engine vibrations. New passengers and pedestrians will call out to you saying "something is wrong with your car, it sounds terrible!" But its OK. She is all truck, sort of like a legal farm tractor with an overdrive gear for the road! And that can good or bad depending on your needs. You can just keep up with traffic in town, the shifts are long but smooth and the clutch is super light via cable actuated. The gearing is super stout-low. In traffic one can ease up on the clutch and idle/crawl away in 1st gear. The downside is highway speeds,a lack of it. Back in the 80s 55 MPH was the limit and that is right where she wants to be. If your doing 65 MPH you are moving! The engine will roar at 3,000 RPMs. Anything over that and the fuel economy disappears altogether. If you drive easy you will get average of 30-32 MPG. It's best to drive ease since if you smack the gas pedal down not a whole lot of anything happens anytime soon! You have to give yourself time to merge onto a highway. Aerodynamics are fashioned after a barn but that adds to incredible cavernous interior. She has lots of sway in the turns so take it easy. On the street the ride is very decent but not plush. But shift into 4X4 low and hold on! This Trooper loves off roading, swallowing up rugged trails with ease. Chassis wise this Trooper is, a trooper! The front end control arms are aligned with shims so if you need an alignment, you bent something. Glad to report that has never happened.
LET'S GO UNDER THE HOOD! The engine is designated the C223T, it's a 2.2L size, non intercooled, in-direct injected diesel, overhead valve, timing belt driven, all cast iron, built by Isuzu. It makes 80 horsepower (No, I did not leave off a zero) around 3800 RPM's. Oil capacity is 6 quarts with filter. Strong points are great cold starting characteristics. Problems are a recall years ago for connection rod breakage. Beware! Not all have had the larger connecting rods fitted. Rear main crankshaft seal is a weak area, loves leak up to a quart a day. Crazy alternator has a vacuum pump built into the rear of it, leaks engine oil and expensive. Watch your oil PSI-the oil cooler is too small for long pulls. Isuzu has a poor network of parts so you should have a back up vehicle, lots of delays. Overall it's a fun and slow utilitarian wagon. But I would not recommend hitting the interstate for long trips.
