I was looking for a summer toy and decided on a 2001-2002 Viper GTS coupe. They look much better than the later models and have ABS unlike the earlier models which is an improvement.
The power and torque is amazing and always there in any gear. You can leave it in third gear and drive like an automatic from 5 to 105MPH. The handling is also amazing, the limits are super high. But it is easy (and fun) to get the rear end sliding, any excess pressure on the throttle will do that as there is NO traction control.
The ride is not bad, on the highway it's quite comfortable or on any decent road. Ground clearance is LOW so be careful parking, it is too easy to smash up the lower part of the front bumper. The front end sticks out much further than most cars so you have to leave plenty of room.
You should also be outgoing and ready to talk to strangers as even old guys in Cadillacs will start talking to you about cars when you are pumping gas or in a parking lot. Viper owners seem more down to earth than most exotic car owners.
You will also get a lot of waves, honks, and race dares, it's not a stealth car at all especially in bright colors with racing stripes.
Reliability seems quite good on the later models and your local Dodge dealer can fix it.
Altogether this is a fun car and for the price there is not much that has the presence and performance. Source: eBay Motors Reviews |

The Viper GTS combines all around performance with decent aerodynamics, incredible styling and in 2001 & 2002 the added safety of ABS brakes. After owning both an RT/10 and a newer SRT-10, I couldn't wait to add this Viper to the collection. The only real downside of Vipers is they are not a touring car, they are designed to go fast on a race track. They do wander in ruts on roads and the seats hold you in place for high-g corners but are a bit too much for long trips. If you really want to drive a car like this, you need to go to driving school first, too many get wrecked due to the sudden movement of the rear end due to all of that torque. Upshifts and downshifts need to be done smoothly especially at higher rpms. In the hands of a seasone pro this easily toasts Z06s on the race track, in fact the SCCA-T1 requires the Viper to add weight and run a 40%air restrictor to make things more equal. If you have a chance go for a ride... it is something you will appreciate. A true American exotic sports car that beats almost eveything under $300k.
The most fun thing I have done with my Viper is attending the Silver State Classic, where there is 90 miles of closed public highway and you have the opportunity to drive well into the triple digits for in excess of 30 minutes, or essentially a complete tank of gas. At this event there is a 1 mile standing shootout, 0-200-0 as well as a car show and the main event, if you like driving fast and don't like tickets, take your performance car and try this event, you will see lots of Vettes and Vipers in attendance. I purchased this Dodge Viper through eBay. Turned out to be fraud. The car does not exist, the seller frauded me, I sent $33,400 and he ran off with my money. eBay will not help under their buyer protection program, very big disappointment and I am out a lot of money. This is not right.. Source: eBay Motors Reviews |
