The second car I ever owned was a '65 Corvair Monza. I needed inexpensive transportation that could fit myself (6'3", 225 lbs.), my wife and baby daughter. The car had adequate room for all the baby gear, decent gas mileage, and good performance with the 110 horsepower engine and 4-speed transmission. The eye-catching good looks were just an added bonus. For my size, the front seat is a little snug, but that is fixable with a quick trip to the junkyard. This car had 125,000 miles on it when I bought it in November of 1980, and I put another 50,000 on it myself before the engine finally succumbed to the repeated thrashings inflicted on it by a 20-year-old. Oh, did I mention that I only paid $325 for this great little car? Since that time I've had 13 more of them, of all years. I currently own a '66 Monza with a worked 140 hp engine, a 4-speed car like the first one, that I use as a nice-day daily driver. I can't imagine being without at least one Corvair in the family, and I highly recommend the Corvair to anyone looking for an accessible, affordable, usable collector car. (I just hope I haven't driven up the demand for, and therefore the price of these great little cars with this review!)
P.S. - My daughter (yes, the baby mentioned earlier) had a 1960 Corvair 700 as her first car!
