Then engine seems to be good and strong and the drivetrain seems to be good although both are being looked at by my trusty mechanic now, the problem is: While the body and paint and floorboards are good, the entire underside of the truck is rusted, i got a quote of $3000 to sandblast and paint with the frame off to get all the rust. this is my only regret because it is more than i bargained for. she sent photos, but i don't think i realized how bad and what tit would cost. I have owned my K5 Blazer for 13 years as of this writing. To be honest, it has been a lawn ornament in my back yard for the last 7 years since I bought my 2002 Avalanche......but the 6 years I drove it as a daily driver were great. The power from the TBI 350 (I searched for 6 months to find one with a 350 instead of a 305) was much better than 351-equipped Broncos I test-drove. The body, while certainly dated by today's standards, is a timeless and instantly recognizable shape.
Mine is the Scottsdale version, with no frills and the military-style rubberized full-floor mat. While you *could* wash it out with a hose, I never have.
I made mine into my vision of the perfect "Man's Blazer". Single-color, glossy black. Limo tinted rear windows. Body-color painted grille and mirrors. Chrome push bar and tube steps, polished aluminum American Eagle "589" 15X8 rims with 31/10.5/15 Pro Comp mud tires. NO LIFT. Limited-slip differentials both front and rear for TRUE 4WD. My truck saw hard use during my years as a Volunteer Firefighter, which directly led to the demise of the engine and transmission.....that's why it is in my back yard now, awaiting resurrection when I have the money. It treated me well, and I will not abandon it. I will drive it again.
Problems......and I believe these to be common with all Blazers.
1. Rear window weatherstripping and crank handle (for those without a power rear window). Weatherstripping cracks, and the window crank handle eventually strips if you don't open the access panel and keep the window channels clean (as I never did).
2. Weak heater core, your windshield WILL ice over in freezing rain conditions.
3. Multiple replacement of the rear driveshaft U-joints, but that may have just been my truck.
4. Very "bouncy" ride by today's standards, but you get used to it and even like it.
5. Towing limited by the short wheelbase. I was towing a 4-place snowmobile trailer, and my front wheels were almost lifting off the ground. Steering was still okay, but braking was horrendous without weight on the front wheels. Also happened towing a car trailer. I installed a set of Rancho "Helper" leaf springs on the rear to alleviate this, but never towed anything significant after that to see if they worked.
6. If you put mud tires on for highway driving, they perform GREAT in every type of weather BUT ICE. On ice, they are downright dangerous! Two feet of snow? No problem, it's actually fun. Had I not been so nice and refused every tip offer, I could have made a lot of money off people I rescued from going in the ditch during snowstorms. Didn't matter how far out or how deep they were stuck, me and my trusty tow chain pulled them out. Torrential downpour with standing water? No problem, the mud tires evacuate water just like the mud they were designed for. I laugh at hydroplaning. But ice.....forget it.
7. You may be tempted to do a custom-built dual exhaust exiting in front of both rear tires, as I did. DON'T. Go the standard route with both pipes exiting the back. The exhaust from the side-exit pipes ate both my rear fenders. Unless you do mostly trail riding, the exhaust will blow straight into the rear wheelwells at highway speeds. I also made the mistake of installing long-tube headers.....go with shortys, unless you build the motor to rev higher.
My Avalanche is a nice truck. I like it okay, and have very few complaints considering I bought it the first week the truck was launched. But I still love my Blazer. Source: eBay Motors Reviews |
