I bought my TSX new in 2005 and now have 53,000 miles on it. When I purchased it, I test drove a BMW 328, Auto A4, Lexus IS, and Mazda 6. While not quite as sporty as the German autos, it was a lot cheaper, offered just as many if not more luxuries, and still offered good performance at a much lower price tag. (Not to mention much better gas mileage: 24/31) In terms of quality of ride, the TSX blew the Mazda away and was comparable to the BMW, Audi, and Lexus.
After owning the car for 3 years, I still enjoy driving it as on the day I got it. The Acura Navigation system is still better than all of my friends' newer systems in other cars. In terms of performance, this car doesn't blow people away off the line, but it's surprisingly fun to drive for a 4 cyl/200hp vehicle. The two best things performance wise are the tight yet smooth suspension, and the performance the car gives you at speed. It'll go from 60 to 80 as quickly as any other car on the road.
The best thing about this car is how resilient and reliable it is. I tend to drive my cars pretty hard. I regularly throw my sports-shift transmission into 3rd gear at 70mph on the interstate to zip by people, and I also tend to accelerate pretty fast at stop lights, etc. I have not had even a hint of a problem with it for the first 53,000 miles.
Bottom line is that the Acura TSX is a great combination of sportiness, quality, luxury, safety, passenger/truck space, and gas mileage, all for a very reasonable price. In fact I'm confident in saying that no car would beat it in all of those categories without costing at least $5K more new.
Last things to consider:
- Spend a few extra bucks for the Nav system. Even if you just drive it around your home town it'll change your life.
- If you're an "automatic transmission" person, try the sports-shift transmission. Even if you like a traditional manual tranny (as I do) this is still fun to drive.
- the 2006+ TSX models have bluetooth integration and real-time traffic on the nav system. I wish I had those. Consider that before buying a 2005.
I hope this helps. Patrick.
